This statistic was on the radio today, and it broke my heart to hear it. “11% of all deaths in Ireland are due to suicide.”
It was the last in a series of conversations which showed me how hard the ground is here, how blatant is the spiritual oppression and deception the Irish have around them all the time. After looking into it I found they misreported the data somewhat (unless there is new data I couldn’t find online). The suicide rate is actually lower, at 12.2 people per 100,000. But the statistic itself isn’t what matters. Suicide is so prevalent in this area nearly everyone has a family member or friend they know who has committed suicide. It has effected them personally. Here is Galway, the suicide rate spikes around exam times due to the university students here. It sounds like it was such a large problem they read about a new person who jumped nearly every day. It has become something that is facing them enough it becomes an option for people that otherwise may not have thought about it (copy cats). They are lost. They don’t know how to go on in a world that seems against them. They need hope. They need Jesus.
Yet while eating lunch with the team here, we were told of a statistic just released in the UK (Great Britian) – 50% of the population is now atheist. And most seem quite proud of it. And where the UK goes, Ireland is not far behind. No wonder suicide is so common. They have removed hope from their lives. ½ of the population has officially declared they have no hope. And how many who aren’t atheist don’t have the hope of Jesus in their lives but are following a false god? So simple is the grace, forgiveness and HOPE of Jesus.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”. – Jeremiah 29:11
“For you formed my inward parts… Marvelous are Your works… You eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed… How precious also are Your thoughts to me O God! How great is the sum of them!” – Psalm 139:13 – 17
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” – Romans 8:1
“Beloved, Now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is”. – 1 John 3:2
“Then he [the thief on the cross next to Jesus] said to Jesus, ‘Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom. And Jesus said to him, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be its Me in Paradise.” – Luke 23:42-43
So simple is His grace and forgiveness! Yet they don’t see it…
Pray for the people of Ireland!
